Modern vs. Vintage

The development of modern society; the absurd nature of the world we occupy with our technological enhancements has always puzzled me. It often makes me wonder what it would be like to live in the past. This fascination between old and new, particularly through fashion, beauty and technology is the basis of this series. With vintage fashion and beauty trends often resurfacing and becoming popular again, it reflects on an aspect of society repeating itself. For each duo of images, the fashion suitable to the era is repeated in both images with the technology changing per image, reiterating how rapidly the technology changes compared to the revival of fashion.

Old fashioned beauty advertisements with their overly posed and excited models sparked the inspiration for this series. Portraiture was the most appropriate avenue of replicating this style as people are often ever changing and developing through their identity of fashion and beauty. The same location, camera distance and low focus to create a grainy effect were used to detail the evolution of the “It Girls” of each era.
